Amnesty Reports on 2003.. 1-0 for foul play

May 26, 2004

Amnesty International

Irene Khan, presenting AI year report 2004

Yup, it’s that time again. A time that no one hardly ever notices but still. Today the 2004 Amnesty Report was released.

Not such a big deal you might say, but really, you’re wrong. These reports summarize _all_ noticed violations.

So… if you really want to find out what unlawfull detention, unfair trials and abuses were caused by the war on terror.. Or if you want to verify that a weak UN is bad for the world… take a look! Click read more for the official announcement.

From the AI website:

Huge challenges confronted the international human rights movement in 2003. The UN faced a crisis of legitimacy and credibility because of the US-led war on Iraq and the organization’s inability to hold states to account for gross human rights violations. International human rights standards continued to be flouted in the name of the “war on terror”, resulting in thousands of women and men suffering unlawful detention, unfair trial and torture – often solely because of their ethnic or religious background. Around the world, more than a billion people’s lives were ruined by extreme poverty and social injustice while governments continued to spend freely on arms.

This Amnesty International Report reflects those challenges. It documents the human rights situation in 155 countries and territories in 2003, and summarizes regional trends. It reports on areas of work being prioritized and developed by Amnesty International — such as violence against women; economic, social and cultural rights; and justice for refugees and migrants – and celebrates the achievements of activists in these and other areas.

In a dangerous and divided world, it is more important than ever that the global human rights movement remains strong, relevant and vibrant. Through its members and allies, Amnesty International remains committed to revitalizing the vision of human rights as a powerful tool for achieving justice for all.

15:20| BramP>my website is a hoax

You’ll have to click read more to get the scoop. Just in case you don’t know what site we’re talking about.. well it’s this one

Yes, that’s the story today. It has been verified, and only moderately exagerrated. What was long believed to be entirely fabricated turned out in a curious form of events to be absolutely true. True that it was false that is. Or falsely true. Actually no, honestly untrue, but still only completely fake. It was the realization of this rather unremarkable bit of pseudo-news that caused the walls of more than one fictional world to come crashing down. In fact, the borders of certain undisclosed nations actually fell, were resurrected, and then fell a second time to fully emphasize how little the news effected them. We can only hope that this minor outbreak of sudden false honesty is not contagious. It could mean the single greatest tragedy that never happened since that brief period where the table of elements decided to rearrange itself alphabetically and change characteristics accordingly. This is one reporter who will never get the taste of that day out of his mouth.

As a side note to this story, steps are already being taken to insure that the fakeness to truth ratio is never jeopardized again. As such a new law has been created which clearly states: “Everything Bram says is a lie. Unless he is honestly lying. In that case only a true lie will be accepted as honestly true. Whereas all other false lies will then be delegated the category of completely true. Which of couse means that at any given time he is always telling the truth. Therefore he is honestly lying.”

We hope this clears up any confusion.

And the winner is: Fahrenheit 9/11

May 22, 2004

news Michael Moore, Cannes winner 2004

Well I guess it was already in the air: Fahrenheit 9/11 has just won Cannes’ top prize today. This is the first documentary to win the prize since 1956! Michael Moore, the filmmaker was reported to be overwhelmed.

Not unimportantly: F-9/11 is a very strong indictment against Bush and his administration. More than one critic is therefore dubbing this a political vote more than an artistic one.

Breaking news: Train crash in Amsterdam CS

May 21, 2004

update 5; 23:15

New numbers: at least 27 injured, 7 very seriously. The firefighters are still trying to free the second person who got stuck. Train traffic around Amsterdam will be impossible to at least tomorrow night.

I’ve moved the updates.. click read more to see them

update 4; 22:30 - More photo’s added
update 3; 20:35

Two people seem to have been stuck in the train, the media reports one is freed. My reports say the other one is almost out as well and that these are not the severily injured persons.

The ’stationsplein’, ‘prins hendrikkade’ and the central station are off-limits. Government officials have just started their investigation in to the cause of the accident.

update 2; 20:10

The media seem have to exaggerated a little. There are now reports of 16 injuries, 2 of which are very serious. First picture is in as well

update 1; 19:30

The story is appearing in the regular news channels now. So far it seems serious although not a great disaster. First estimates are 2 fatalities and 20 injuries. Click read more for details.

Initial report; 18:50

First tentative reports are coming in about a possible traincrash on Amsterdam Central Station. I have no details so far.. only a report from the police band scanner that talks about two trains on top of eachother. The news-media haven’t said anything about this so far

Let’s hope this is minor.

Current information

The crash seems to have happened around 18:30 when an intercity collided with an empty double-leveled train. The first parts of the intercity have slided over the top of the other train and is now sticking into the air.

Firemen have started breaking trough the windows of the first carriage to free the casualties there

The power cables have cut off and all trains going to or from Amsterdam are grounded

Note: I seem to get the news about this story earlier than the news-media, so I’ll continue to update this article when I learn more.

Interesting tidbit: Virtual money to the next level!?

May 16, 2004

tech Digital Money

In a must read story on “The Walrus” author Clive Thompson tells the tale of a man who discovers that a game (EverQuest in this case) has actually it’s own economy, which, because of e-bay auctions for online gaming accounts and items, is worth cold hard cash.

He also calculated that EverQuest is currently the 77th richest country in the world (if it would exist that is) with a ‘national product’ of $2,266 per capita. The hourly winnings in the game actually exceed minimum wages in most countries.

Funny: Huge news

May 15, 2004

Anonymous Yes it’s true. A new member has joined. It is too true! If there were a forum you could read all about. If there were a gallery you couldn’t see pictures about it. But that’s just because there aren’t any pictures of the joining ceremony. Not because it didn’t happen. It did happen. It really did. The peasants are still rejoicing infact. So there. Furthermore, to mark such an historic occassion, an article of truly useless size has been submitted. Right here. The one you just read.

The only problem now is how to make an even more useless or, if you prefer, ‘uselesser’ article to follow up on this ground breaking, earth shattering and er… tea spilling bit of news.
